MANUSCRIPT FORMATTING GUIDELINES
Based on the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (ICMJE, www.ICMJE.org).
Manuscript Preparation
- The manuscript must be submitted in Russian or English, typed using MS Word 2007 (Times New Roman typeface, font size 14, line spacing 2.0), and printed in 2 copies on one side of A4 paper, with mandatory provision of an electronic version. Margin sizes: top — 2.0 cm; bottom — 2.0 cm; left — 3.0 cm; right — 2 cm. All pages, beginning with the title page, must be consecutively numbered.
- The volume of a full-size original article, including the sections listed in clause 3, must be 20–30 pages; a review article — no more than 40 pages; an article describing clinical observations — no more than 15 pages; a conference proceedings review — no more than 10 pages.
- The manuscript must consist of the following elements: title page; abstract (summary); initials and surname(s) of the author(s); title; introduction (background); research objective; main body; conclusions and reference list. The main body of an original article must contain the sections: “Materials and Methods”, “Results”, “Discussion”.
- The title page must provide the following information:
— full title of the article;
— initials and surnames of the authors;
— official name and location (city, country) of the institution(s) where the work was carried out;
— for the running head — an abbreviated version of the article title (no more than 50 characters, including spaces and punctuation marks);
— keywords (no more than 6), author information.
It is also necessary to provide information on sources of sponsorship support in the form of grants, equipment, and medications; to certify the absence of conflicts of interest; to indicate the number of pages, tables, and figures, as well as the correspondence address.
- The article title must be concise, informative, and accurately define its content. Keywords should be selected according to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list adopted in Index Medicus.
- The author information must include the authors’ surnames, first names, patronymics, academic degrees and titles, positions, and place of work (name of the institution and its structural subdivision). The correspondence address must include the postal code and address, workplace, contact phone numbers, and email address of the author who will conduct editorial correspondence. The correspondence address is published together with the article.
- The abstract (summary) of an original scientific article must necessarily include the sections “Objective”, “Materials and Methods”, “Results”, “Conclusion”. The abstract must be provided in Russian and English (250–300 words) and must be suitable for publication separately from the article. Abstracts of brief communications, reviews, and case reports are not structured; their volume must be at least 150 words. Abstracts, keywords, author information, and bibliographic lists are submitted by the editorial office to electronic information databases for indexing.
- The “Introduction” must provide a brief literature review on the topic under consideration, focus attention on controversial and unresolved issues, and formulate and justify the research objective. References must be made to publications from the past 10 years, and the literary sources used in the article must demonstrate the author’s (authors’) knowledge of scientific achievements in the relevant field of medicine.
- The “Materials and Methods” section must provide detailed information concerning the chosen study subjects and methods, as well as characterize the equipment used. In clinical studies where diagnostic and treatment methods do not conform to standard procedures, authors must provide confirmation that the ethics committee of the institution where the work was carried out approves and guarantees compliance of the latter with the Declaration of Helsinki of 1975. Articles must not contain confidential information that could identify the patient (mention of their surname, medical record number, etc.). On X-rays, angiograms, and other information carriers submitted with the article, the patient’s surname must be obscured; photographs must also not allow the patient’s identity to be established. Authors are obliged to inform the patient of the possible publication of data concerning the specifics of their illness and the diagnostic and treatment methods applied, and to guarantee confidentiality when placing the said data in print and electronic publications. In cases where it is impossible to conceal the patient’s identity (photographs of facial plastic surgery, etc.), authors are obliged to provide the patient’s written informed consent to the dissemination of information and to indicate this in the article. In experimental work using laboratory animals, information must be provided that the maintenance and use of laboratory animals during the study complied with international, national, or institutional rules on the ethical treatment of animals. At the end of the section, a detailed description of the methods of statistical processing and analysis of the material is given.
- The “Results” section must accurately and in sufficient detail reflect both the main content of the research and its results. For greater clarity of the data obtained, it is advisable to present them in the form of tables and figures.
- In the “Discussion” section, the results obtained in the course of the study must be critically discussed and analyzed from the perspective of their scientific novelty and practical significance, and compared with already known data of other authors.
- Conclusions must be concise and clearly formulated. They must answer the questions posed in the research objectives, reflect the main results obtained, indicating their novelty and practical significance.
- Only generally accepted symbols and abbreviations should be used. When any word combinations are frequently used in the text, their abbreviation in the form of an acronym is permitted, which at first mention is given in parentheses. Abbreviations in the title may only be used in exceptional cases. All physical quantities are expressed in International System (SI) units. Only international nonproprietary names of medicinal products are permitted.
- The reference list must be formatted in accordance with the requirements of the Vancouver style (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/administration-and-support-services/library/public/vancouver.pdf). Abbreviations of journal names are given in accordance with Index Medicus. The surnames and initials of all authors must be indicated. When the number of authors exceeds six, the insertion of [et al.] after the first six authors is permitted. A reference list in English transliteration must also be provided. Reference numbering must correspond to the order of citation in the text, not alphabetical order. Reference numbers are given in square brackets (e.g., [1, 2], or [1–4], or [3, 5–8]). Original articles must cite no fewer than 15 and no more than 30 sources; literature reviews — no more than 50. References to abstracts of theses, dissertations, methodological and deposited manuscripts are not permitted in articles. References to abstracts and articles in scientific collections may only be used in cases of absolute necessity. In articles where there is a pressing need to mention regulatory documents, the latter are given as footnotes and are not included in the reference list. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all references, as well as the accuracy of citing primary sources.
- The spelling conventions accepted by the journal must be observed.
- Tables must be placed in the article text immediately after their mention, numbered, and titled, and where necessary accompanied by footnotes. Tables must be prepared in Microsoft Office Word 2007 format.
- Illustrative material (photographs, figures, drawings, diagrams) must be clear and high-contrast, and numbered in accordance with the order of citation in the text. Diagrams must be provided both as a figure in the text and in electronic form as separate files in Microsoft Office Excel format. In captions to microphotographs, the staining method and magnification must be indicated. Electronic versions of illustrations must be provided as separate files in TIFF or JPEG format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi with a linear photograph size of at least 80×80 mm (approximately 1000×1000 pixels).
